1 - Is it expensive to go lead-free?
No. Lead-free components are the same price as leaded components.
2 - Why should I bother with RoHS compliance?
RoHS is a European Union directive which took effect on July 1'st 2006 and is enforced in each EU member state. Major companies in some other countries (such as China and Japan) are embracing RoHS voluntarily. Although there is no similar US legislation pending, most manufacturers will not waste their time producing both leaded and lead-free versions of a single product intended for global export.
3 - What does RoHS stand for?
RoHS is the 'Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment'. Contrary to popular belief, RoHS doesn't just mean 'lead-free'. RoHS restrictions apply to five other hazardous materials as well as lead: cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl and polybrominated biphenyl ethers.
4 - Why is there so much concern about lead?
The primary catalyst for lead-free legislation has been growing concerns that electronic products disposed in landfills could be leaking hazardous substances into groundwater systems.

Because lead-free solders have higher melting points than leaded solders, they require higher process temperatures.

These temperatures can cause PCBs to warp during soldering, so consultation with our engineers is critical when designing lead-free boards.
